Project Nivara: Community Care Centre
Project Nivara is a 15-bed, 24-hour critical care shelter for drug users in need of holistic treatment. Clients come to Nivara with a wide range of health problems, most commonly abscess wounds caused from infected injecting sites and opportunistic infections like tuberculosis due to a weakened immune system from HIV. Because most of our clients are street-based, their living conditions make it extremely difficult for them to recover fully from these various infections and illnesses. Clients in need of care are referred to us from our drop-in centres and then are housed at Nivara where they are referred for appropriate medical tests and seen through their treatment until they are stable. After they are discharged from the program, they are referred back to the drop-in centres where our staff continues to reach out with follow-up visits.
